Exhausted National Guard troops rest on Capitol floor after working endlessly to keep grounds safe – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

WASHINGTON (WSVN) — Eerie and chilling scenes can be seen across the nation’s Capitol. A few pictures showed just a glimpse of how hard the National Guard has been working to keep the building safe.

The photos show hundreds of National Guard troops resting on the floor. Many of the troops are armed and their riot shields are all nearby.

They could be seen using their bags as pillows or to cover their eyes. Others were seen heading out to start their shift.

Massive military trucks are parked outside the Capitol, not far from a barricade blocking anyone from getting close.

The increase in security comes one week after supporters of President Trump stormed the Capitol.

Overnight, a chain-link fence and concrete barriers were put up around Vice President Mike Pence’s residence at the U.S. Naval Observatory.

As Congress prepares for a historic and unprecedented vote at the Capitol to impeach Trump for a second time, family members left Thank You notes in the tunnels below thanking Capitol Police for their dedication and for keeping their loved ones safe.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s Deputy Chief of Staff released a photo showing Pelosi thanking the National Guard members.

Up to 15,000 troopers are expected to be on duty in the coming days to assist law enforcement and help secure the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden.

There are more troops on the ground in D.C. than there are in Iraq and Afghanistan combined.
